When most people think about screens, they picture one thing: that gray mesh in every window. But there are actually four distinct mesh types available, each designed for different situations. Picking the right one for each window and door in your home can make a real difference in durability, visibility, comfort, and even energy costs. Here is a straightforward comparison to help you choose.
Standard Fiberglass
This is the default mesh that comes with most screens. It is affordable, easy to work with, and does the basic job well: keeping insects out while allowing airflow and decent visibility. Fiberglass mesh lasts 5-10 years depending on sun exposure and handling. It is included in our base pricing ($45 per window rescreen, $55 for a new screen). For interior-facing windows, bedrooms, or windows that do not get heavy use, standard fiberglass is perfectly adequate.
Pet-Resistant Mesh
Pet screen is made from vinyl-coated polyester that is roughly seven times stronger than standard fiberglass. It resists scratching, pushing, and the general abuse that dogs and cats dish out. It is thicker and slightly less transparent than fiberglass, but the tradeoff is worth it if your pets interact with your screens. We recommend pet mesh for sliding screen doors (the most common pet-damage point), low windows where dogs tend to press their noses, and any screen you have already replaced due to pet damage. The upgrade adds $20 per window screen or $40 per door screen.
Solar Mesh
Solar mesh blocks 65-90% of the sun's heat before it enters through the glass. It is the best choice for south-facing and west-facing windows, especially in San Diego's inland communities where summer temperatures regularly exceed 90 degrees. Solar mesh can reduce cooling costs by 25-40% on the windows where it is installed. It looks slightly darker than standard mesh, similar to wearing sunglasses. The upgrade adds $20 per window screen or $40 per door screen. Read our full guide on how solar screens reduce energy bills for more details.
UltraVue Mesh
UltraVue is the premium option for maximum clarity. The mesh uses thinner fibers and a tighter weave that virtually disappears when you look through it. It is ideal for view windows, especially in homes with ocean, canyon, or mountain views. UltraVue still keeps insects out and allows airflow, but it feels like there is almost nothing between you and the outdoors. The upgrade adds $20 per window screen or $40 per door screen. Mixing and Matching
Most of our customers use more than one mesh type across their home. A common setup: pet screen on the sliding door and any windows the dog can reach, solar mesh on the south and west windows, UltraVue on the main view window in the living room, and standard fiberglass everywhere else. We help you figure out the right combination based on your home's layout, your priorities, and your budget.
