With normal use, Roll Away retractable screens typically last 10-15 years. The mesh itself can be replaced without replacing the entire housing if it eventually wears out. The spring mechanism is the most durable part of the system.
They work best on casement, awning, tilt-out, and picture windows where a fixed screen would interfere with operation. For standard sliding or double-hung windows, a traditional fixed screen is usually more practical and cost-effective.
When deployed, the screen mesh is tensioned in side tracks that hold it steady in moderate wind. In strong gusts, we recommend retracting the screen to protect the mesh. This is part of why retractable screens work well in San Diego. You can easily pull them in when conditions call for it.
Retractable screens use insect mesh and pull horizontally across the window opening. Drop shades are exterior fabric panels that roll down vertically to block sun and heat.
