Pet Screen vs Standard Mesh: Which Is Right for You?

By San Diego Mobile Screens · 5 min read

If you have pets, you've probably experienced the frustration of watching a cat claw through a screen or a dog barrel through a screen door. Standard fiberglass mesh just isn't built to handle that kind of abuse. That's where pet screen comes in, but it's not the only upgrade worth considering. Here's an honest breakdown of the most popular mesh types so you can pick the right one for your home.

Standard Fiberglass Mesh

This is what comes on most window screens and screen doors from the factory. It's made from woven fiberglass coated in PVC, and it does a fine job of keeping bugs out while allowing good airflow. It's also the most affordable option. The downside: it tears relatively easily. A determined pet, a stiff wind-blown branch, or even a child leaning against it can create holes. If you don't have pets and your screens are in protected locations, standard fiberglass is perfectly adequate.

Pet-Resistant Screen (Pet Screen)

Pet screen is made from vinyl-coated polyester rather than fiberglass. The weave is thicker and the material is roughly seven times stronger than standard mesh. Dogs can push against it, cats can climb it, and it will hold up. It's the go-to choice for any screen that pets interact with regularly, like sliding screen doors, low windows, and patio enclosures.

The tradeoff is visibility. Because the strands are thicker, pet screen is slightly darker and more visible than standard mesh. Most people find it perfectly acceptable, but if you're screening a window with a prized ocean view, you might want UltraVue on that window and pet screen on the doors.

Cost-wise, pet screen adds about $20 per window screen or $40 per door screen over standard mesh. For the durability you get, it's one of the best upgrades available.

UltraVue Mesh

UltraVue is an ultra-fine woven mesh designed for maximum visibility. The strands are thinner than standard fiberglass, so the screen practically disappears. It's popular in coastal San Diego homes like La Jolla, Del Mar, and Encinitas, where homeowners want to preserve their views while still keeping bugs out.

UltraVue is not pet-resistant. It's actually more delicate than standard mesh. If you have animals, save UltraVue for windows they can't reach and use pet screen where they can.

Solar Mesh

Solar screen mesh blocks a significant portion of the sun's heat and UV rays before they enter your home. It's especially useful on west-facing and south-facing windows that get hammered by afternoon sun. Many homeowners in inland San Diego communities like Escondido, Ramona, and Lakeside install solar screens to reduce cooling costs during summer.

The trade-off is that solar mesh reduces outward visibility more than other options. It also makes rooms slightly darker inside. But for rooms where heat is the primary concern, the energy savings and comfort improvement are significant.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Pets at home? Pet screen on doors and low windows. UltraVue on upper-floor windows if you want the view.
  • Ocean or canyon views? UltraVue where visibility matters most.
  • Hot west-facing rooms? Solar mesh to cut heat and glare.
  • Budget-conscious, no pets? Standard fiberglass does the job well.
  • Mix and match. Most of our customers use different mesh types in different parts of the house. That's the smart move.

Not sure which combination is right for your home? We bring samples on every visit so you can see and feel the difference before deciding.
