One of the biggest advantages of retractable screen doorsis that they practically disappear when not in use. But when they are deployed, and when you see the housing from outside, you want the door to complement your home's style. Roll-A-Way, the brand we install, offers a range of color and configuration options that make it easy to find the right fit. Here is what is available and how to choose.
Color Options
Roll-A-Way retractable screen doors come in a range of standard colors that cover the most common home exteriors in San Diego. The most popular options include white, almond, bronze, brown, sandstone, and black. White and almond are the most requested for homes with light-colored stucco or trim, which describes a large percentage of San Diego homes. Bronze and brown blend well with darker wood tones and Mediterranean-style homes. Black is increasingly popular for modern and contemporary homes where dark window frames are a design feature.
The housing, tracks, and handle all come in the same matched color, so the entire unit looks cohesive. Custom color matching is available for unique situations, though standard colors cover the vast majority of homes we work on.
Single Door vs. Double Door
Standard single retractable screens work for openings up to about 48 inches wide, which covers most standard patio doors. For French doors and wider openings, Roll-A-Way offers double-screen configurations where two screens meet in the middle. Each screen retracts independently into its own housing on either side of the opening. This setup works beautifully for double French doors, wide sliding glass doors, and large patio openings. Double configurations start at a higher price point but provide seamless coverage for openings that a single screen cannot handle.
Mesh Options
Retractable screens come standard with a fine-weave mesh that maximizes visibility and airflow. For homes near the coast or in areas with heavy sun exposure, you can also opt for solar mesh that blocks additional heat while still retracting smoothly. Pet-resistant mesh is not typically available in retractable configurations due to its thickness, so if pet durability is your primary concern, a security screen door or standard sliding screen door with pet mesh may be a better fit.
How to Choose the Right Style
- Match your door frame. The simplest approach is to match the retractable screen housing to your existing door frame color. If your sliding glass door frame is bronze, go with bronze.
- Consider your exterior trim. If your door frame and trim are different colors, matching the trim often looks more cohesive since the housing sits against the door frame.
- Think about visibility. If you want the screen to disappear completely when retracted, choose a color that closely matches the surrounding wall or frame so the slim housing blends in.
- Modern homes. Black housings on modern homes with dark window frames create a clean, intentional look that complements contemporary architecture.
Installation and Pricing
Roll-A-Way retractable screen doors start at $699 installed, regardless of color choice. Standard colors are included in the base price. Installation takes about 45-60 minutes for a single door. We custom-measure every opening to ensure a perfect fit, because retractable screens depend on precise alignment to operate smoothly and retract fully.
If you are not sure which color or configuration works best for your home, we are happy to bring samples and show you the options in person. Seeing the colors against your actual door frame makes the decision easy.
