5 Signs Your Sliding Screen Door Needs Replacing

By San Diego Mobile Screens · 4 min read

Sliding screen doors take more abuse than almost any other part of your home. They get opened and closed dozens of times a day, bumped by kids and pets, rattled by wind, and baked by the San Diego sun. Over time, things start to go wrong. Some problems are easy fixes. Others mean it's time for a new door. Here are the five most common signs we see, and what to do about each one.

1. It Doesn't Slide Smoothly

If your screen door sticks, jumps, or requires a hard shove to open, the rollers are probably worn out. Screen door rollers are small nylon or steel wheels at the bottom of the frame that ride in the track. After years of use, they flatten, crack, or seize up. Dirt and debris in the track make it worse. Sometimes a thorough track cleaning and roller adjustment fixes the problem. But if the rollers are shot, they need replacing. Depending on the door's age, it may be more cost-effective to replace the whole door than to source replacement parts.

2. The Mesh Is Torn or Sagging

This is the most common issue we see. A pet scratches through the mesh, a branch pokes a hole, or the mesh simply sags from years of UV exposure. If the frame is still straight and functional, a rescreen is all you need. We remove the old mesh, roll in fresh material (standard, pet, or UltraVue, your choice), and have it back in the track in about 15 minutes. A sliding screen door rescreen runs $95.

3. The Frame Is Bent or Warped

Aluminum screen door frames are lightweight by design, which means they can bend or bow over time. Common causes: wind catching the door when it's open, someone tripping over the bottom rail, or the door being forced when rollers are stuck. A slightly bent frame might still work, but a warped frame causes the door to bind in the track, leaves gaps for bugs, and makes the door feel flimsy. Once the frame is compromised, replacement is the better investment.

4. It Doesn't Latch Properly

The latch keeps the door closed against wind and prevents pets from pushing it open. If the latch doesn't engage or the door swings open on its own, first check that the strike plate on the jamb is aligned. If the latch hardware itself is broken, replacement latches are inexpensive. But if the door frame has shifted so much that no adjustment gets the latch to catch, that's a sign the whole door has reached the end of its life.

5. You Can See Daylight Gaps

Close your screen door and look at the edges. If you can see daylight between the door frame and the door jamb, especially along the latch side or bottom, bugs, dust, and debris are getting in. Small gaps sometimes mean the door just needs height adjustment via the roller screws. Larger gaps mean the door is the wrong size (sometimes installed by a previous homeowner), or the frame has warped beyond adjustment. Either way, a properly measured replacement door eliminates the problem.

Rescreen vs. Replace: The Quick Guide

Here's the simple decision framework we recommend to customers:

  • Rescreen ($95). Frame is straight, rollers work, and just the mesh is damaged or worn.
  • Replace ($329). Frame is bent, rollers are shot, or the door has multiple issues. A new custom-built door comes with fresh mesh, new rollers, a working latch, and a proper fit.

Not sure which route makes sense? We'll always give you an honest recommendation during the estimate. If a rescreen will do the job, we'll say so.
