Before you call

Troubleshooting a Sliding Screen Door

A few things worth trying before you call, and the signs it's time to call.

The bottom corner of a sliding screen door: the roller rides in the track, and an adjustment screw above it raises or lowers the dooradjustment screwrollertrack

It keeps coming off the track

Usual causes
Worn or broken rollers, rollers set at the wrong height, a bent track or a bent frame.
Try this first
Clean the track, then look for the adjustment screws at the bottom corners of the door. They raise or lower the rollers so the door sits in the track.
When to call us
The rollers are cracked, flat or won't spin, the track is dented, or the frame is bent.

It sticks or is hard to slide

Usual causes
Sand and dirt in the track, flat-spotted rollers, or rollers set too low.
Try this first
Vacuum the track and wipe it clean. A dry silicone spray helps; skip oil and grease, which collect dirt.
When to call us
It still drags after a cleaning, or the rollers grind or wobble.

It won't latch or close

Usual causes
The latch and its catch are out of line, the door sags, or the latch or handle is broken.
Try this first
Check whether the latch lines up with the catch on the frame. On a sliding door, adjusting the roller height can bring it back in line.
When to call us
The latch or handle is broken, or the door sags no matter how you adjust it.

The mesh is torn or loose

Usual causes
Pets, kids, sun and age.
Try this first
A small patch kit can hold a pinhole for a while.
When to call us
For anything bigger. A sliding door rescreen is $95, and pet-resistant mesh adds $40.
