What the salt does
Within a mile or so of the water, salt settles on everything. It pits aluminum frames, stiffens fiberglass mesh and grinds into the rollers of sliding screen doors. Rinsing screens and tracks with fresh water every few months adds years; once a frame is corroded or the mesh is brittle, we rebuild it rather than patch it.
Keeping the view
UltraVue is a thinner, nearly invisible mesh that keeps more of the view than standard fiberglass. It costs more and isn't as tough as pet-resistant mesh, so it makes the most sense on the windows you actually look out of, not on a patio door the dog pushes through.
Condos and associations
A lot of La Jolla living is in condos and townhomes run by associations, and some set what anything visible from outside may look like. Check your rules first; we'll tell you the mesh and frame we plan to use so you can include them in your request.

Will new screens block my ocean view?
Any screen softens the view a little. UltraVue is the clearest mesh we install. Among standard meshes, charcoal and black are easier to see through than gray, because dark mesh reflects less light.
How often do screens near the beach need replacing?
There's no fixed schedule. The screens closest to the water wear first. Replace a screen when the mesh sags, tears or turns brittle, or when the frame corrodes enough that it no longer sits tight.
Can you put a retractable screen on French doors that face the water?
Yes. A Roll Away retractable French door set is $1,299 installed, and it rolls out of sight when you don't need it. If your size and color are in stock it goes in the same day; otherwise we measure, order and install it when it arrives.
